According to Centers for Discovery, “about 20 percent of all teens experience depression before they reach adulthood.” Furthermore, only 30% of those diagnosed with depression receive treatment.

Research shows that untreated depression and anxiety can lead to things like an increased chance of substance abuse, poor performance in school, and higher risk for self harm and suicide.

Although mental health is a serious and prevalent issue in teens, it is not often discussed openly. There seems to be an unfair stigma attached to mental illness. The result of this is that many students don’t know about the resources or options available to teens who deal with things like depression and anxiety.

One of the primary resources offered here at school is our counselor Ms. Hope.  Ms. Hope is a Nationally Certified Counselor, and before coming to Lotus she earned her Masters in Education and Education Specialty in Counseling Education at Clemson University.

Ms. Hope’s office is in room 201. It is a cozy, warm room with a big window and a comfy seating area.

Some students may feel uncomfortable about speaking to a counselor. They may think that only students with major mental illness or serious life issues can talk to a counselor, but this is not true. Students are allowed to see Ms. Hope at any time and for any reason, whether it is related to home or school life. Talking to a counselor can be a very effective way of dealing with normal stress and emotion.

Stress is a leading factor for depression.

As students, it is easy to let stress get the best of you and make you think negatively about most of the things going on in your life. There are some ways you can handle stress on your own, like taking a step back and focusing on one thing at a time, but talking to a trusted adult or counselor can help when you need a little more support. A counselor is someone trained to deal with sensitive issues and can give you strategies to cope and new ways of looking at things.

Another advantage of speaking to a school counselor is that you are guaranteed confidentiality. The only exception to this is if she believes a student is going to hurt themselves, hurt others, or that they are in  immediate danger.

No one should feel embarrassed to seek the help that they need. It is important for everyone to take care of their physical and mental well-being.
