Russian UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, has recently been suspended for nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Conor Mcgregor has also received a six month suspension. This is due to their brawl at UFC 229 back on October 6th of 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Prior to the match, there had been much media attention and press conferences to advertise it. In the press conferences, the two fighters get the chance to exchange words, voice their thoughts and answer the media’s questions. Conor Mcgregor–known for his aggressive smack talk–threatened and harassed Khabib multiple times during the conference. “Terrorist,” and “rat” were some of the many insults that Mcgregor directed towards Khabib, while Khabib kept a more composed demeanor.

The match ended in the fourth round, with Mcgregor tapping out early. This was followed by Khabib jumping out of the cage, hurling towards one of Mcgregor’s crew members and close friends who was insulting Khabib from the floor. Khabib was fined $500,000 and received a nine-month suspension that was issued by the NAC (Nevada Athletic Commission) which will be retroactive the day of the match (October 6, 2018), until July 6th of 2019.

People believe that the suspension and fine were too extreme, while others believed that Mcgregor got a pass on the racist remarks he made countless times and that his punishment should have been harsher.

Senior Sam Omair said, “The punishment was fair, even though the actions were justified because of what Mcgregor said.”

Regardless of the suspension, many fans can’t wait to see these athletes hit the mat once more.
