Lotus held the second annual S.T.E.A.M.Festival on Saturday, March 2nd, from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm at Aurora Mall Town Center. The event, hosted by Mr. Katmer and the science department at Lotus, featured projects by students showcasing their enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Their were fun interactive demonstrations lead by student volunteers and teachers.

Ms. Martin took care of the Yoga exhibit.

A wide variety of students participated in the S.T.E.A.M. Festival and helped out regardless of their grade level. Some Elementary students were helping Mrs. Emel with demonstration of the VEX IQ Robots and drones, a plastic snap together construction system tailored for elementary and middle school students. Similarly, Mr. Savas was helped by Mushtari, a Senior at Lotus, by showing the public their calligraphy skills by writing text in calligraphy.

Mr. Russel presented various Japanese projects.

Students were expected to come help set up for the S.T.E.A.M. festival and stay a little after to help clean up. Lotus provided Students with lunch at the Steam festival, to which students were really thankful. A lot of Students used this opportunity to get some extra credit in their science, math or elective classes.

This was one of the many stations at the S.T.E.A.M festivals.

When I asked Esra Hima, a middle school student here at Lotus, how she felt about the S.T.E.A.M. festival she replied, “I joined the S.T.E.A.M. festival this year because I wanted to participate in more school events. I really appreciated how this years event was more organized…It was also nice because we had different performances from several individuals, who have great talent.”

If you didn’t check this project, you missed out.

Additionally, Guest who were interested in Lotus were able to participate in raffle tickets to win some cool prizes. They were also able to walk around and enjoy the different demonstrations and live performances that were going on. They were able to look at all the cool experiments that Lotus students were working on.

There were so many exhibits to check out.

The Robotics club also showed up and demonstrated their robot and allowed kids to try it out by controlling the robot and playing a simple game in which they attempted to pick up a cube or ball and place it in a box. As kids saw how challenging it is, the more they got into it and expressed their interest in Robotics. The Robotics club was happy to see the younger generation take an interest in Robotics because that also means new members for next years Robotics team.

When I asked senior Nalan Yilmaz how she felt at the S.T.E.A.M. festival she answered, “It was fun to see other engagement on the topic and now it will definitely affect next year’s students who are interested in Robotics because this year it was mostly Seniors. It will be easier for the Robotics club to get more members next year because of the publicity they have gained at the S.T.E.A.M. festival.”

The S.T.E.A.M. festival overall was a success. Everyone that showed up had fun and enjoyed all the demonstration that Lotus provided them with.
