They lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for four years. They then moved to the US in the year 1995, where they settled in Cedar Riverside in Minneapolis. She became a U.S citizen in the year 2000, at the age of 17.

Ilhan Omar went to Thomas Edison High School where she became a volunteer student organizer. She began her professional career as community educator at the University of Minnesota. Omar has been a devoted activist ever since. In 2012, she served as a campaign manager for Kari Dziedzic’s reelection campaign. Through advocacy work with which she’s been involved, she advanced in important issues that included support for working class families, educational access, and racial equality.

Some of her main accomplishments include issuing millions of dollars to encourage vaccines and improve educations, helping raise money for low income students who wanted to join summer programs, helped fund over $70 million to help the homeless, and helped over 500 immigrants with resource fair. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is an amazing woman who has gone through a lot to be where she is now. She is a  woman who knows what’s right for her people and country. Even though she has been discriminated against due to her gender, race, and religion, she has always shined through. She was the first woman of color to serve as a U.S representative. Ilhan is a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and a congresswoman who is a role model not only to me but to a lot of women of color.
