Fans all over the world gathered to witness the new Supercopa as the two soccer giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, were put up against each other. Due to the 2019 Spanish Super Cup, the tournament was revamped, which gave two runner up teams, Atlético Madrid and  Valencia, a chance at the final. The format was proposed by the Spanish Football Federation. The tournament was set to premiere on the 8th of January.

The first match up was between Real Madrid (La Liga Champions) and Valencia (Copa del Rey holders). Valencia fought a hard battle against a legendary team but the end result showed. Real Madrid won the first match (3-1) and was headed to the finals.

The second match took place the next day, in which Barcelona (third-best ranked in La Liga) and Atlético Madrid (La Liga runner-up) were up against each other in the second semi-final. Atlético Madrid played a heck of a game with such a great strategy.

Freddy Peraza, an eighth-grader at Lotus, strongly believes that Barcelona is a great team regardless.

He said, “They still have great chemistry and it was an equally balanced match up. Real Madrid deserves the cup but I wish Barcelona went to the finals. Atlético Madrid really improved over the years.”

The final match up was set. Real Madrid was finally getting a chance to face off against another team. It was a hard-fought game but it also gave Real Madrid a chance while both teams were neck in neck. Over the course of 90 minutes, both teams tried to advance in the first quarter but neither could clinch the lead.

In addition, both teams had many opportunities to score. Real Madrid shot 24 times and either was close to scoring or got shut down by the defense. Atlético attempted 15 times but didn’t succeed. Both of the teams put up an intense match which created a lot of tension and curiosity within fans.

Hafsa Hassan “It was such an intense game. Both teams were neck and neck and this left me on the edge of my seat,” said Fernando Alcantar.

Fernando Alcantar, a freshman and sports fanatic, says, “It was such an intense game. Both teams were neck and neck and this left me on the edge of my seat”.

Finally, when the score was 0-0 at the end of regular time, the match went into overtime. Penalty kicks took place to determine the final winner. Real Madrid claimed the cup and defeated their rivals 4-1 on penalties.
